Everybody's Talkin'

I have a huge, honkin' beer belly now.  It's impossible to hide that I am incubating.  And now that the obvious is well, for lack of a better word, obvious, everyone keeps asking me the same question:  what will I do with my dogs?

What people want to hear me reply is "Oh, we're going to find them all good homes."  Never!  They make my home complete.  Without these knuckleheads, I don't have home.  I may have a building with windows and doors, but not a home.

So I've been instead replying "I'm going to spoil them even more.  I'm grateful for their calming presence in light of my raging pregnancy hormones.  I'm going to love them more than ever possible."

I love the blank look on people's faces when they hear my reply.

So Mafiosos, rest assured that you four are not going anywhere, no matter what the crazy people suggest.  I will continue to spoil you with a plethora of dogs beds and light fires for you in the fireplace because I know just how much you love the warmth.  Because even though we're having a baby, you four are my original babies.  And nothing's gonna change that.

  1. Well said! I have two chogs (child-dogs) and despite being 5 months preggo myself, I wouldn't think of giving them up for anything! When I volunteered at the SPCA it was heartbreaking how many people sited "new baby" as the reason they gave their dogs up! It basically enraged me.
We are currently deciding which dog bed would go best with the baby room as they will certainly need their own space in there as well! My westie has been waiting to have a baby of her own around to clean up after.

  2. Few things make me more angry than people who just use their dogs as bookmarks until the real babies come along. Good for you.

  4. My parents first 'children' were two yellow Labradors. I couldn't imagine a childhood without them as my big brothers. One even taught me how to walk by letting me pull up on him and then slowly taking steps so that I could get the hang of it. Don't let anyone tell you differently, your child will thank you for his/her fuzzy family!

  5. Good for you! At the shelter, I hear "we just had a baby" more often than not as the reason for giving up a dog. Why? Did the dog react to the baby? No... So then, why?

I'm so glad you've already decided to keep them because THEY ARE FAMILY TOO! :)

  7. Why would people assume you would give your dogs away? That's just ridiculous!

  8. I don't understand people. When our daughter was born we had three dogs and two cats. Daughter is now nine years old and our fur family has grown to five dogs and three cats. The pets are her most cherished companions and her friends are all envious. Growing up in a house full of loved and loving pets is a wonderful experience for a child. Your baby will be very lucky!
